Downsizing in Plano: How to Use a Storage Unit Without Keeping It Forever
Downsizing in Plano: How to Use a Storage Unit Without Keeping It Forever

Moving from a house to something smaller is mostly a sorting job. A 2,400 square foot house does not fit in a 1,200 square foot patio home, and nobody decides what to do with forty years of furniture in one weekend.
A storage unit helps with that. It can also turn into a bill you pay for years on things nobody wanted. Here is how to get the first without the second.
Rent for the sorting, not for the stuff
The best use of a unit when you downsize is as a holding spot while you decide. The house has to be empty for the closing or the listing photos. The decisions don't. Move the "not sure yet" pieces to the unit, get the house where it needs to be, and sort from there on your own time.
The worst use is renting one so you never have to decide. That's the unit people are still paying for five years later, full of a sofa nobody liked.
So set an end date before you move anything in. Three months is plenty for most families. Put it on the calendar.
Sort into four piles before the truck comes
Go room by room and give every big piece one of four labels:
- Coming with me. It fits the new place and it gets used.
- Going to family. Somebody asked for it, and they have a date to pick it up.
- Sell or give away. It's leaving, it just hasn't left yet.
- Not sure. This is the only pile that belongs in storage.
The "going to family" pile can sit in the unit too, if the grandkids are coming in December for the dining table. Just make sure they know where it is and when to get it.
Climate controlled or drive-up?
Our Plano facility has both, and it matters more for a downsizing move than most.
Climate control is worth it for the things families care most about: wood furniture, the cedar chest, quilts, photo albums, paper records, a piano, anything with glue in it. A Plano summer inside a closed metal unit is hard on all of that.
Drive-up is fine, and it costs less, for the garage and the patio: tools, lawn furniture, holiday decorations, sealed plastic bins. You back up to the door and unload off the tailgate.
Plenty of families end up splitting it: a smaller climate-controlled unit for the keepsakes and a drive-up for the garage. If you're not sure, call us and tell us what you have. We'll tell you which one you need, even when that's the cheaper one.
How big a unit?
Smaller than you think, if you sorted first. A 10x10 holds about what a two-bedroom apartment does, appliances included. For only the "not sure" pile out of a three or four bedroom house, that's usually enough.
If you didn't sort first and you're moving the whole house, you'll need more space, and you'll be paying to store things you'll give away later. That's one more reason to sort first.
What it costs and how billing works
Web rates at our Plano facility start at $30 a month, and the facility page shows what's open today and the price on each size. It's month to month. There's no long contract, and you can leave when you're done sorting. Rent is due on the 1st, and we ask for ten days' notice before you move out.
That's why the end date matters. A unit is cheap by the month and expensive by the year.
When it's someone else's move
A lot of downsizing moves around Plano are a parent moving closer to family or into a retirement community, with a son or daughter running the move from across town or out of state. That works. You can rent online any hour and move in the same day, so the paperwork doesn't have to wait for a trip to the office. If you have questions about the account, call the office and talk to someone here.
